Acyclovir is indicated for the acute treatment of herpes zoster (shingles).
Herpes zoster disease
-- An acute infectious, usually self-limited, disease believed to represent activation of latent varicella-zoster virus (HERPESVIRUS 3, HUMAN) in those who have been rendered partially immune after a previous attack of CHICKENPOX. It involves the SENSORY GANGLIA and their areas of innervation and is characterized by severe neuralgic pain along the distribution of the affected nerve and crops of clustered vesicles over the area. Acyclovir is contraindicated for patients who develop hypersensitivity to acyclovir or valacyclovir.
-- Altered reactivity to an antigen, which can result in pathologic reactions upon subsequent exposure to that particular antigen.
Acyclovir capsules and tablets are intended for oral ingestion only.
Renal failure, in some cases resulting in death, has been observed with acyclovir therapy (see ADVERSE REACTIONS, Observed During Clinical Practice and OVERDOSAGE).
Thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura/hemolytic uremic syndrome (TTP/HUS), which has resulted in death, has occurred in immunocompromised patients receiving acyclovir therapy.
