Amlodipine besylate tablets are indicated for the treatment of hypertension.

They may be used alone or in combination with other antihypertensive agents.

Hypertensive disease -- Persistently high systemic arterial BLOOD PRESSURE. Based on multiple readings (BLOOD PRESSURE DETERMINATION), hypertension is currently defined as when SYSTOLIC PRESSURE is consistently greater than 140 mm Hg or when DIASTOLIC PRESSURE is consistently 90 mm Hg or more.

Amlodipine besylate tablets are contraindicated in patients with known sensitivity to amlodipine.

Rarely, patients, particularly those with severe obstructive coronary artery disease, have developed documented increased frequency, duration and/or severity of angina or acute myocardial infarction on starting calcium channel blocker therapy or at the time of dosage increase.

The mechanism of this effect has not been elucidated.
