"A malignant tumor arising from the epithelium of the rectal mucosa. Most rectal carcinomas are adenocarcinomas; squamous cell carcinomas of the rectum are also seen. Prognosis depends on tumor stage (depth of wall invasion, lymph node involvement, presence of distal metastases). -- 2004"
