The author of this casebook has identified the following medical topics as being highly relevant to this casebook.

  • Stage I Anal Canal Cancer -- Cancer that has spread beyond the top layer of anal tissue and is smaller than 2 centimeters (smaller than 1 inch).

  • Anal cancer recurrent -- The reemergence of anal cancer after a period of remission.

  • Malignant neoplasm of larynx -- A primary or metastatic malignant tumor involving the larynx. The majority are carcinomas. -- 2003

  • Laryngeal neoplasm -- Cancers or tumors of the LARYNX or any of its parts: the GLOTTIS; EPIGLOTTIS; LARYNGEAL CARTILAGES; LARYNGEAL MUSCLES; and VOCAL CORDS.

  • Stage IIIB Anal Cancer -- Cancer has spread to the lymph nodes in the middle of the abdomen or in the groin, or the cancer has spread to both nearby organs and the lymph nodes around the rectum.

  • stage III anal cancer -- Stage III anal cancer is divided into stage IIIA and IIIB. Stage IIIA anal cancer has spread to the lymph nodes around the rectum or to nearby organs such as the vagina or bladder. Stager IIIB cancer has spread to the lymph nodes in the middle of the abdomen or in the groin, or the cancer has spread to both nearby organs and the lymph nodes around the rectum.

  • Stage IV Anal Canal Cancer -- Cancer has spread to distant lymph nodes within the abdomen or to organs in other parts of the body.

  • Anal carcinoma -- A carcinoma that arises from the anus. Anal carcinomas include the anal canal and anal margin (perianal skin) carcinomas. The anal margin carcinoma is staged separately as a skin carcinoma. Anal cancer stage terms are usually used as synonyms for anal canal cancer stage terms. -- 2003

  • Biopsy of Larynx -- Removal of tissue from the larynx for microscopic examination.

  • Stage IIIA Anal Cancer -- Cancer has spread to the lymph nodes around the rectum or to nearby organs such as the vagina or bladder.

  • Carcinoma of larynx -- (luh-RIN-jee-ul KAN-ser) Cancer that forms in tissues of the larynx (area of the throat that contains the vocal cords and is used for breathing, swallowing, and talking). Most laryngeal cancers are squamous cell carcinomas (cancer that begins in flat cells lining the larynx).

  • Throat Cancer -- Carcinoma, predominantly squamous cell, arising from epithelial cells of the larynx or pharynx. -- 2004

  • Stage II Anal Canal Cancer -- Cancer that has spread beyond the top layer of anal tissue and is larger than 2 centimeters (about 1 inch) but has not spread to nearby organs or lymph nodes.

Notes

Medical tourism is a term originally coined by travel agencies to describe the rapidly-growing practice of traveling across international borders to obtain health care. The early practice of medical tourism was to combine vacation travel with cosmetic procedures. Later patients began to travel abroad to obtain conventional therapies at reduced costs compared with their home countries. They may also travel to obtain treatments that are not available in their home country.

The links associated with this casebook reflect the publicized cases of Farrah Fawcett and Bret Hudson who traveled to the same Klinik in Germany to obtain unconventional treatments for advanced anal cancer and throat (laryngeal) cancer, respectively.
